interlude -- hike to the local grocery store

Alex has been asking to get out and hike, but winter conditions continue to limit her possibilities...I promised her we would hike this weekend come what may....so today I present..

The Multiple Mile hike to the Campton Cupboard grocery store.

Here we are at the trailhead...uh, I mean the steps outside our house.

We started off on a large, wide trail.

We found we had to share the trail with numerous large, mechanical objects. The trail was wide enough, and my hearing acute enough, for me to feel comfortable -- the large fast-moving objects made a lot of noise, and I had no problems moving Alex far off the trail and into the trees whenever I heard one approaching.

One two occassions, a very large, slow-moving object with a large shovel-like thing stuck to its front came toward us. We had to cross the street when it approached, since it roamed along the far sides of the trail and scooped up everything in its path. Staying off to the side just wouldn't cut it with this monster, we had to just plain get as far away as possible when it advanced.

We kept seeing signs, but they were all covered with rime-ice. Well okay, not really.

The snow kept on falling during our hike, coating our hats, coats, and facemasks.

Soon after this picture was taken, a safety officer found us and asked if we were lost. She looked at us curiously -- apparently, not many hikers utilize this trail. Alex told her we were out for a hike. The officer said, "Uh....okay.....well, um....have fun," and went on her way.

We soon came to a lovely little bridge. The waterfall pictured is half frozen...the left half is frozen, the right half is flowing. It was quite beautiful.

Alex amused herself by pushing all the snow off the railing of the bridge.

We crossed a very busy intersection, and plunged waist-deep into the snow. We postholed badly, completely ruining the trail for anyone who wants to snowshoe the .05 miles of sidewalk at the intersection of Route 49 and 175. My apologies.

Less than one tenth of a mile later, we arrive at our destination!

A very happy morning out-of-doors!
